Eloy's Remarkable Recovery After a Stroke
When Eloy arrived at Solara, he required medical management post-craniotomy. After working with his interdisciplinary care team, he was able to discharge to a Skilled Nursing Facility.
A Patient Success Story from Solara Specialty Hospital Harlingen
Eloy is a retired member of the United States Air Force. He went to a local hospital with the worst headache of his life. While there, the left side of his face started to droop, and his left upper and lower extremities became weak. A “code” was called for stroke, and Eloy was sent for a CT scan, which revealed severe bleeding in his brain. Eloy was admitted to the Neuro ICU, and doctors performed a craniotomy to access and remove a large hematoma (blood clot) from his brain. Eloy was intubated, placed on mechanical ventilation, and eventually required a tracheostomy.
When Eloy arrived at Solara Specialty Hospitals Harlingen, the main focus was medical management post-craniotomy. He had severe cognitive and linguistic deficits and was being fed through a feeding tube. The wound care team helped care for his surgical incision. The respiratory team worked on downsizing his tracheostomy, performing Red Cap trials, and keeping his lungs clean through suctioning. His trach was eventually removed as he regained the ability to breathe independently.
Physical therapy helped Eloy progress from no mobility to walking 200 feet. He was on fall precaution for much of his stay but showed much improvement as he neared discharge to a skilled nursing facility. The occupational therapy team helped him progress from being unable to move his arms to actively moving them with no assistance. The speech therapy team helped Eloy become fully oriented, at a conversational rate, and return to a regular diet. The nursing team coordinated care to ensure safety and comfort, checking on his vitals and medicines and assisting him with activities of daily living.
“Everyone at this hospital was great – they treated me well and always were checking in on me. I’m very grateful to all of you.“
Eloy’s improvement has been amazing. He is eager to get back to his home and a more normal life.
