AT ADMISSION
After several days of coughing and a suspected leg infection, Silvia visted an ER. She was found to have a necrotizing soft tissue infection that required surgery to remove damaged tissue. She developed respiratory failure from ARDS and required intubation and mechanical ventilation. After 23 days of being intubated, she received a tracheostomy and an NG (feeding) tube. Her prognosis was initially very poor.
TREATMENT AT CORNERSTONE
Silvia arrived at Solara Specialty Hospitals Harlingen as a total-care patient with no bed mobility. She couldn't even make a fist. Silvia received IV antibiotics, respiratory therapy, and wound care, as well as physical, occupational, and speech therapy. The team began with range-of-motion exercises and worked diligently with her.
OUTCOME
Silvia was decannulated. Her wounds healed, and she regained arm movement, ate independently, walked 15 feet with parallel bars, and became fully conversational. Able again to interact with family and friends, Silvia was discharged to a skilled nursing facility.
