Eveline's Recovery with Traumatic Brain Injury After A Car Accident

Solara Specialty Hospital Harlingen patient Eveline poses with her care team

When Eveline arrived at Solara, she was recovering from a traumatic brain injury and required mechanical ventilation and a PEG tube. After working with her interdisciplinary care team, she was able to discharge to an Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility.

Eveline was ejected from the vehicle in a single-car accident in which the car was crushed beyond recognition.

AT ADMISSION

Found unresponsive at the scene, Eveline suffered a traumatic brain injury and cervical spine fracture. Skin was torn from her scalp, and her spleen and kidney were lacerated. Eveline experienced acute respiratory failure requiring a tracheostomy and mechanical ventilation. She also needed a PEG (feeding) tube. Eveline’s mental status was considered very limited as she couldn’t respond to commands.

TREATMENT AT SOLARA

At Solara Specialty Hospitals Harlingen, Eveline received respiratory therapy, wound care,  and physical, occupational, and speech therapy. She was successfully weaned from the ventilator, decannulated, and no longer needed supplemental oxygen. After arriving as a total-care patient with no bed mobility, Solara rehabilitation therapists helped improve her alertness, responsiveness, arm movement, and early communication, including her saying, “Mom,” and giving a high-five.

OUTCOME

After 48 days at Solara, Eveline was discharged to an acute inpatient rehabilitation facility.
