Christopher's Story of Recovery from Septic Shock and Respiratory Challenges

When Christopher arrived at Solara, he required wound care, respiratory care, and rehabilitation therapy. After working with his interdisciplinary care team, he was able to discharge to an Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility.

A Patient Success Story from Solara Specialty Hospital McAllen

Christopher, who had a history of cellulitis (a bacterial infection of the skin), endured a swollen leg, redness, and pain for a couple of days at home. His wife urged him to go to the hospital, but he initially refused.  Eventually, however, he couldn’t stand the pain any longer, and he agreed to seek help.

When Christopher arrived at the hospital, he was found to be in severe septic shock and in need of an emergency tracheostomy and mechanical ventilation to breathe. Christopher was also diagnosed with cellulitis to the right leg, lactic acidosis, an acute kidney injury, and a buildup of lymphatic fluid in his lower extremities. Doctors made an incision at Christopher’s leg wound to evaluate for pus, and the wound got bigger and infected.

Christopher was eventually transferred to Solara Specialty Hospitals McAllen for wound care, respiratory care, and rehabilitation therapy.

The Solara team was able to wean Christopher off the ventilator completely and cap his trach. In addition, through physical and speech therapy, Christopher regained the ability to walk and eat, and his caregivers treated his leg wound. He was able to transfer to an inpatient rehabilitation facility to continue his recovery.

“Thank God for everyone that he’s put in my path to help me heal.”

After a three-week stay at the rehab facility, Christopher and his mother returned to Solara to visit his former caregivers and express their gratitude. He was eager to show the staff the additional progress made walking and regaining his independence, and he was looking forward to returning to work as a dental assistant.
